First Impressions
What if today was the day?
Imagine getting a text that someone you love is coming home today — not next month, not eventually, but today. You'd probably start cleaning, right? Maybe run to the store, clear your schedule. There'd be this sudden urgency to get ready.
That's the energy behind Paul's letter to the Thessalonians. These were brand-new Christians — we're talking maybe three weeks of church attendance before their pastor got run out of town. They were scared, confused, and wondering what happens next. So Paul writes them this letter, and tucked inside is this beautiful, urgent reminder: Jesus is coming back. And when he does, everything changes.
Look at how Paul describes what happened when they first believed: "They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven." Three actions. Turn. Serve. Wait. It's not complicated, but it's also not passive. This isn't "sit around and hope for the best" Christianity. This is active, intentional, expectant living.
Here's what strikes me: Paul doesn't say "if" Jesus returns. He says "when." He doesn't say "maybe someday." He says they're waiting for his Son from heaven — present tense, ongoing action. Like you're standing at the airport watching the arrivals board, knowing the plane is coming even if you don't know the exact minute it lands.
We've been living in the last days for 2,000 years now. Every generation of Christians has had to wrestle with this same question: How do I live like Jesus could return at any moment? And the answer hasn't changed. We turn from the things that distract us. We serve the God who's alive and active. We wait — not passively, but with our eyes on the horizon, ready and expectant.
So here's the question for today: If Jesus came back this afternoon, would you be ready? Not "have you been perfect" — none of us have. But are you facing the right direction? Are you living like someone who actually believes he's coming back?
