Day 1 · Free1 Peter 5:6-11

First Impressions

You're in a battle you didn't know you signed up for

Let's be honest — most of us wake up thinking about our to-do list, not spiritual warfare. We're worried about the presentation at work, the argument we had last night, whether we remembered to pay that bill. But Peter opens this passage with a reality check: you have an adversary. Not a critic. Not a hater. An adversary — someone actively working against you.

Peter's writing to people who are scattered, suffering, and trying to figure out how to live for Jesus in a world that doesn't care. Sound familiar? And right in the middle of practical advice about humility and anxiety, he drops this: 'Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.' That's not metaphor. That's a warning.

But here's what I love about this passage — Peter doesn't leave us defenseless. He gives us a game plan. Humble yourself. Cast your anxieties on God. Stay alert. Resist. And then — this is the best part — he reminds us that we're not alone in this. 'The same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.' You're not crazy. You're not weak. You're in a fight, and so is everyone else who's trying to follow Jesus.

This week, we're going to dig into what it actually means to stand firm when life is coming at you hard. Not because you're tough enough, but because God is faithful enough. Peter ends this passage with a promise: 'After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace...will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.' That's not a pep talk. That's a guarantee.
