First Impressions
When the outside doesn't match the inside
We all know someone who looks perfect on Instagram but whose real life is a mess. The perfectly curated feed, the highlight reel, the carefully angled photos that hide what's really going on. Jesus had a name for people like that — hypocrites. The word literally means 'actor' — someone playing a role, wearing a mask.
In Matthew 23, Jesus goes after the religious leaders of his day with some of the harshest words he ever spoke. These were the guys who had it all together on the outside. They knew scripture backward and forward. They wore bigger prayer boxes on their foreheads to prove how holy they were. They loved being called 'Rabbi' and getting the best seats at dinner parties. But Jesus saw right through it. 'They do not practice what they preach,' he said.
Here's what hits hard: Jesus wasn't just calling out pastors and religious leaders. He was exposing something that lives in all of us — the temptation to look good on the outside while our insides are a wreck. The junk drawer we don't want anyone to see. The closet we tell guests not to open. The parts of our lives we work really hard to keep hidden.
Jesus cares way more about what's happening inside you than what you're presenting to the world. He's not impressed by the show. He wants the real you — mess and all.
