First Impressions
When everything you expected gets flipped upside down
Imagine planning the worst day of your life. You wake up early, gather your supplies, and head out to do something you've been dreading. That's exactly where these women were on that first Easter morning. They weren't going to a party. They were going to finish preparing a dead body for burial.
The text says they came "very early in the morning" with spices they'd prepared. Think about that for a second. They'd spent time and money getting these burial spices ready. They knew exactly what they were walking into—or so they thought. They were coming to say a final goodbye to their teacher, their friend, the person they'd believed was going to change everything.
But then verse 3 drops this bomb: "But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus." Can you feel the confusion in that moment? You show up expecting one thing, and reality is completely different. The stone's rolled away. The tomb is empty. And the body? Gone.
Here's what I love about this: God specializes in reversals. He takes our worst moments and flips the script. These women came expecting death, and they found life. They came to mourn, and they ended up celebrating. They came with spices for a corpse, and they left with news that would change the world.
Maybe you're walking into this week carrying something heavy. Maybe you're dealing with a situation that feels dead—a relationship that's fallen apart, a dream that didn't work out, a mistake you can't undo. You're showing up to your own version of that tomb, expecting nothing to change. But what if God's about to pull off a reversal? What if the very thing you think is over is actually about to come back to life?
The women didn't go to the tomb expecting a miracle. They went because it was the right thing to do, even when it was hard. They showed up even when hope seemed gone. And that's when God met them with the impossible.
Sometimes faith isn't about having all the answers or feeling super spiritual. Sometimes it's just showing up on the hard days, doing the next right thing, even when you can't see how it's going to turn out. The women didn't know Jesus was about to walk out of that grave. They just knew they needed to be there. And that was enough.
What if your "showing up" today—even in your doubt, even in your pain—is exactly where God wants to meet you? What if the reversal you need is closer than you think?
