First Impressions
A letter from a friend who sees something in you
Picture getting a letter from someone who believes in you more than you believe in yourself. That's what's happening here. Paul is writing to Timothy, a young pastor who's probably feeling overwhelmed, and the first thing Paul does is remind him: I see you. I remember you. I pray for you.
This isn't a business memo or a theological treatise. It's a love letter from a spiritual father to a spiritual son. Paul mentions Timothy's grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice — two women who passed down a genuine faith. But now they're not around anymore, and Timothy's standing on his own two feet, leading a church in a city that doesn't make it easy.
Then Paul drops this line that's going to follow us all week: "God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." The word Paul uses for "fear" here isn't about being startled or nervous. It's deeper — it's the kind of fear that makes you want to run from the battle. It's the fear that whispers you're not enough, you can't do this, you should quit while you're ahead.
Paul's saying: That's not from God. Whatever voice is telling you to shrink back, to play it safe, to let someone else step up — that's not the voice of the One who called you. God gave you power. God gave you love. God gave you self-discipline. Those aren't just nice words. They're weapons against the fear that wants to write your story for you.
So here's the question as we start this week: What story has fear been telling you? What has it convinced you that you can't do, can't be, can't overcome? Because the truth is, you get to choose who narrates your life. And God's version of your story looks a whole lot different than fear's version.
Sit with this
- 1If someone who truly believed in you wrote you a letter today, what would they remind you about yourself that you've forgotten?
Journal prompt
Write about a time when fear told you a story about yourself that wasn't true. What did fear say? What's the real story?
