First Impressions

What if generosity isn't about the amount?

Picture a farmer standing at the edge of a field. In one hand, he's got a small pouch with just enough seed for a tiny garden plot. In the other hand, he's carrying a full sack — enough to plant acres. Which harvest do you think will be bigger?

That's the image Paul drops into this letter to the Corinthian church. He's not trying to guilt anyone. He's not twisting arms. He's simply laying out how the world works when it comes to giving: you reap what you sow. It's not magic. It's not manipulation. It's just... how seeds work.

But here's what catches most people off guard in this passage — Paul immediately follows up the farming analogy with something that sounds almost too good to be true: "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion." Wait. God doesn't want us giving because we feel pressured? He wants us to decide ahead of time, with joy?

That's exactly right. The word Paul uses for "cheerful" here is hilaros in Greek — it's where we get our word "hilarious." God loves a giver who's almost giddy about it. Not because the amount is huge, but because the heart behind it is free. No guilt. No manipulation. No arm-twisting. Just a decision made in freedom: I'm going to be generous because that's who I want to be.

This week, we're going to unpack what it looks like to shift from a mindset of scarcity — always worried there's not enough — into a mindset of seed. What if you started seeing everything you have as potential? What if every dollar, every hour, every skill you possess could be planted somewhere to grow something beautiful?

That's the invitation. Not to give out of fear or obligation, but to step into the kind of life where generosity becomes your default setting. And it starts with one simple question: What if I decided right now that I'm the kind of person who gives?

Sit with this

  1. 1When you think about giving — whether it's money, time, or help — what's your first emotional reaction? Excitement? Anxiety? Resentment? Why do you think that is?

Journal prompt

Write about a time when someone gave something to you freely, with no strings attached. How did it make you feel? How did it change the way you saw that person?
