When everything feels like it's falling apart
David wrote this psalm while literally running for his life. His own son, Absalom, had turned against him and was trying to take his throne. Imagine that for a second — your kid trying to destroy everything you've built. The people who were supposed to be on your side are now saying God has abandoned you. If there was ever a moment to spiral into anxiety, this was it.
But here's what's wild about this psalm. David doesn't pretend everything's fine. He starts by naming exactly what's happening: "Lord, I have so many enemies. So many are against me." He's not putting on a brave face or trying to sound spiritual. He's just honest. And that honesty is actually the first step toward peace.
What stands out in this passage is how David moves from panic to peace in just eight verses. He goes from "everyone's against me" to "I'm not afraid of ten thousand enemies." That's not toxic positivity or denial. That's what happens when you stop fighting the smoke of anxiety and deal with the actual fire underneath it. David knew the real issue wasn't his circumstances — it was whether God was still with him. And once he reminded himself of that truth, everything changed.
This week, we're going to walk through this psalm together and figure out how David made that shift. Because chances are, you've got your own version of enemies surrounding you. Maybe it's not a literal army, but it's the bills that keep piling up, the relationship that's falling apart, the job situation that's got you up at night, or the fear that you're somehow fundamentally broken. Whatever it is, this psalm has something to say to you.
