When Your List Isn't Enough

Going deeper on Kristin Mockler Young's sermon at Mosaic Church Charlotte (Charlotte, NC).

Week of Oct 11, 2026

The big idea

You can know God by trusting Jesus and learning his ways, even when you cannot answer every question.

Day 1 · FreePhilippians 3:3-11

First Impressions

What if you could stop proving yourself?

Think about the last time you felt you had to prove you belonged. Maybe you walked into a room where everyone seemed to know what they were doing. Maybe someone asked a question about your faith, and your mind went blank. It can be tempting to reach for a list: I go to church. I help out. I try to be kind. Those can be good things. But a list is a shaky place to put your peace, because sooner or later you will miss something on it. In Philippians 3, Paul speaks to people who might feel that same pressure. He begins with a surprising claim: people who follow Jesus put their confidence in Christ, not in what they can achieve. You can come close to God without first becoming the person who has every answer ready.

Paul knows what it is like to have a strong list. He names his family background, his training, and his hard work. If belonging to God were a contest, he had reasons to expect a high score. Then he says all of it looks different beside the gift of knowing Christ. That does not mean his past never mattered, or that learning and doing good are bad. It means none of those things can do what Jesus does. They cannot make Paul right with God. They cannot give him a life built on trust instead of fear. Read verses 7 through 9 slowly. Notice how often Paul points away from what he has done and toward what Christ has done. The center of the passage is a person, not a report card.

That may be hard to believe if faith has felt like one more place where you are falling behind. You might wonder whether God is disappointed when you struggle to pray or cannot explain a Bible passage. Paul does not ask you to pretend those struggles are gone. He invites you to bring them into a relationship with Jesus. Try a small start today. Tell God one thing you do not understand and one thing you hope to learn about him. Then read this passage again and ask what Paul seems glad to receive. You do not need to force a special feeling. You can begin by being honest. The God Paul wants to know meets people whose hands are open, even when they do not know what to say next.

Where the passage connects

  • Philippians 3:3-11

Paul gives up confidence in his religious record so he can trust Jesus, know him, and share in his new life.

  • 1 Peter 3:15

Peter’s call to explain your hope raises the fear of having too few answers, which the sermon brings back to knowing Jesus.

  • John 1:18

Jesus shows us what God is like, so his actions and words guide how we understand God.

  • 1 Corinthians 13:12

Paul’s mirror image reminds us that we see only part of the picture now, though one day we will understand more fully.
