Not Afraid Anymore

Going deeper on Josh Howerton's sermon at Lakepointe Church (Rockwall, TX).

Week of Aug 16, 2026

The big idea

God never hands you a spirit of fear he hands you power, love, and a clear mind, so fear only wins when you let a liar prophesy over your life instead of fighting for the truth.

Day 1 · Free2 Timothy 1:6-7

First Impressions

You weren't given a spirit of fear — so why does it feel that way sometimes?

Picture a young pastor, barely out of his twenties, trying to lead a church in one of the biggest, most spiritually chaotic cities in the ancient world. That's Timothy. And the guy who trained him, Paul, is now sitting in a Roman prison waiting to die. So Paul does what any good mentor would do — he writes one more letter. Not a strategy memo. Not a to-do list. A letter meant to steady a kid who is clearly rattled.

Right in the middle of it, Paul says something so direct it almost feels like he's reading Timothy's mail: "God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." Read that again slowly. Paul isn't scolding Timothy for feeling scared. He's naming what's actually going on underneath the feeling — Timothy has let fear move from something he feels to something that's running the show. There's a difference between fear showing up and fear taking over the wheel.

Here's what stands out when you sit with this passage fresh: Paul doesn't tell Timothy to just try harder or think positive. He points him to something he already has — a gift from God that's already inside him, just waiting to be stirred back up like coals in a dying fire. That's actually the first thing Paul says in this section: "fan into flame the gift of God." Before he even gets to the fear stuff, he reminds Timothy that what God put in him didn't leave just because things got hard.

Maybe that's you this week. Maybe you've got a decision to make, a conversation to have, a step of faith to take, and fear has been doing most of the talking. This passage isn't asking you to pretend you're not scared. It's inviting you to notice the difference between a feeling passing through and a spirit taking control. One you can feel and keep moving. The other one needs to be named and confronted. This week, we're going to slow down in this passage and look at exactly how Paul walks Timothy — and us — out of that second kind of fear.

Sit with this

  1. 1Where in your life right now does fear feel like it's calling the shots instead of just passing through?

Journal prompt

Write about one moment this week when fear tried to take the wheel. What was it telling you to do or not do? Now ask yourself honestly — was what it said actually true?

Where the passage connects

  • 2 Timothy 1:6-14

This is Paul coaching young pastor Timothy through four concrete moves to stop being run by fear and start being run by the Spirit.

  • 2 Timothy 3:12

Paul warns that a godly life invites opposition, which resets our expectations so hardship does not automatically mean we messed up.

  • Philippians 1:21

Paul's declaration that living means Christ and dying means gain shows why threats had no power over him, since he had already decided Jesus was worth any cost.

  • 2 Kings 6:8-17

Elisha's servant sees his eyes opened to an army of fire surrounding the enemy army, picturing how knowing God's size shrinks the size of our threats.

  • Lamentations 3:22-23

The promise of mercies renewed each morning explains why we are not given strength for tomorrow's fear today, only for what today actually holds.

“Sometimes you will suffer not because you did something wrong, but because you did something right.”

Josh Howerton

“We don't follow Jesus just because he makes life better. We follow Jesus because he is better than life.”
