Day 1 · FreeMark 1:1-8

First Impressions

The urgency of good news

Mark doesn't waste time. Right out of the gate, he hits you with it: "The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." No long introduction. No genealogy. Just boom — good news is here.

In the first century, when a messenger ran into town shouting "good news," everyone knew what that meant. A battle had been won. The enemy was defeated. The king was victorious. People would drop what they were doing and gather around to hear the details. That's the energy Mark brings to his gospel. He's writing like someone who knows lives are at stake and time matters.

Before Jesus even shows up, there's John the Baptist — this wild-looking prophet out in the wilderness wearing camel hair and eating locusts with honey. He's not trying to impress anyone. He's preparing people for something massive. John's message is simple: Get your life right. Confess your sins. Get baptized. Because someone way more important than me is coming, and you need to be ready.

What's striking is that people actually listened. The text says "all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem" were going out to him. Imagine that — entire regions of people leaving their homes, walking out to the middle of nowhere, admitting their failures, and getting dunked in a river. Why? Because they were desperate for good news. They'd been waiting for God to show up and do something. And John was saying, "He's almost here."

That same urgency is still true today. The good news about Jesus isn't something you get around to eventually. It's not a nice idea to consider when life calms down. It's the most important message you'll ever hear, and it changes everything the moment you receive it.

Sit with this

  1. 1When you hear the phrase 'good news,' what's the first thing that comes to mind — and how does that compare to the good news Mark is talking about?

Journal prompt

Write about a time when you received news that changed everything for you. What made it feel urgent? How does that compare to how you've responded to the message about Jesus?

“But make no mistake, even though God was not speaking through his prophets, there were a lot of false prophets running around.”

“Jesus uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. He takes people that society has counted out and invites them in.”
