When God Sings Over You

Going deeper on Joey Presutti's sermon at Gather Church.

Week of May 10, 2026

Day 1 · FreeZephaniah 3:14-20

First Impressions

What if God's not disappointed in you?

Picture this: You're standing in a courtroom. The evidence is stacked against you — every mistake, every failure, every time you fell short. The verdict comes in: guilty. You brace yourself for the sentence. But then something unexpected happens. The judge stands up, tears up the verdict, and starts singing. Not a stern lecture. Not a disappointed sigh. Singing. Over you. With joy.

That's the scene Zephaniah paints here. God's people had messed up — badly and repeatedly. They'd chased after false gods, ignored his voice, and earned every bit of judgment coming their way. But instead of ending with condemnation, this book closes with one of the most stunning images in all of Scripture: God rejoicing over his people with singing.

Read through Zephaniah 3:14-20 slowly. Notice how many times God calls his people to rejoice, to sing, to stop being afraid. Notice what he promises to do: take away judgments, clear away enemies, be present with them, quiet them with his love, and sing over them with joy. This isn't a distant, disappointed God. This is a God who can't contain his delight over his kids.

Maybe you walked into this week feeling like a failure. Maybe you're exhausted from trying to measure up — as a parent, as a spouse, as a person. Maybe you're convinced God is keeping a running tally of everything you've done wrong. If that's you, this passage is for you. God isn't standing over you with a clipboard. He's standing over you with a song. And the lyrics are about how much he loves you, how proud he is of you, and how he's not giving up on you — ever.

The gospel changes everything. It means the verdict against you has been torn up. It means your past doesn't define your future. It means you can stop performing and start resting in what Jesus has already done. You're not on probation with God. You're his beloved child, and he's singing over you right now.

Journal prompt

Write about a time you felt like you were standing in a courtroom — either literally or emotionally. What would it mean for God to tear up that verdict and sing over you instead?
