The dirtiest thing in the room wasn't anyone's hands
Picture this: a group of religious experts leaves Jerusalem and walks almost 70 miles — four or five days on foot — just to catch Jesus doing something wrong. When they finally arrive, here's what they're upset about: some of his followers ate a meal without washing their hands the 'right' way. That's it. That's the whole complaint. Not a miracle they doubted. Not a claim about God they questioned. Dirty hands at dinner.
It's easy to read this and think, wow, those guys had their priorities way off. But before we get too comfortable, it's worth asking where we do the same thing. We can get worked up over how someone worships, what they wear to church, or a comment they made online, while walking right past the actual state of our own hearts. Jesus points this out by quoting the prophet Isaiah: 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.' In other words, you can say all the right things and still be miles away from God on the inside.
Here's what makes this passage so good for us today. Jesus isn't just calling out the Pharisees. He's inviting all of us to look at what we actually get upset about. If your blood pressure rises more over small stuff than it does over the ways you've hurt people, ignored God, or protected your own image, that tells you something about where your heart really is. The good news is that Jesus doesn't respond to hypocrisy by walking away. He steps right into the middle of it, names it clearly, and still offers a way forward. That's the whole story of this passage — and honestly, the whole story of the gospel. God doesn't wait for you to clean yourself up before he'll deal with you. He meets you exactly where the mess is.
This week isn't about feeling bad for being human. It's about getting honest. What if the things you get most defensive about are actually pointing you toward what needs the most attention in your own life? That's not a comfortable question, but it's a good one. Jesus asked it of the most religious people in the room. He's asking it of us too.
