When good people miss God
Picture this: Jesus and his friends are walking through a field on Saturday. They're hungry, so they grab some grain to snack on. Normal, right? But the religious leaders lose their minds. "That's not allowed on the Sabbath!" they shout.
Here's what gets me about this story — these Pharisees knew the Bible backwards and forwards. They'd memorized huge chunks of Scripture. They prayed multiple times a day. By every religious measure, they were the good guys. But when God himself showed up in their grain field, they completely missed him. They were so busy protecting their rules that they couldn't see the person standing right in front of them.
Jesus doesn't argue with them about the technicalities. Instead, he asks them a question: "Have you not read?" It's almost funny — like asking a professional chef if they know how to boil water. Of course they've read it. They've read it a thousand times. But somehow, they've missed the whole point. They know the words but don't understand the heart behind them. God never wanted people to be hungry on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was supposed to be a gift — a day to rest and remember that God provides. But these guys turned it into a burden, a test you could pass or fail.
What if the scariest thing isn't being far from God — it's being close to religious stuff but far from his heart? What if you can know all the right answers and still miss the whole point?

Write about a time when following the rules felt more important than caring for people. What would it look like to flip that priority?
