First Impressions

The story that makes us squirm

Let's be honest — this parable feels weird. A landowner hires workers throughout the day, and at quitting time, everyone gets the same pay. The guy who worked one hour gets the same paycheck as the guy who worked twelve. If this happened at your job, you'd be calling HR.

But that's exactly why Jesus told this story. He wanted it to make us uncomfortable. He wanted us to feel that little twinge of "wait, that's not fair" — because that feeling reveals something important about how we think God should work.

The workers who started at dawn had every reason to expect more. They'd negotiated their wage, showed up early, worked through the hottest part of the day. They did everything right. And when they saw the late arrivals getting a full day's pay for an hour of work, they thought: finally, we're about to get what we really deserve. But they didn't. They got exactly what they'd agreed to — nothing more, nothing less. And suddenly, what felt like a fair deal that morning felt like an insult by evening.

Here's what's wild: the landowner never cheated them. He kept his word. Their problem wasn't what they received — it was what someone else received. They couldn't celebrate another person's unexpected blessing because they were too busy calculating what they thought they were owed. Sound familiar? This is the story Jesus tells right after a rich young ruler walks away sad and Peter blurts out, "We left everything to follow you — so what do we get?" Jesus answers with a parable about workers who can't stop comparing their blessings to everyone else's.

Maybe you've been there. You've been faithful, shown up, done the right things — and someone who just showed up yesterday seems to be getting what you've been waiting for. A promotion. A healing. A breakthrough. And you're left thinking: God, I've been here. Where's mine? This week, we're going to sit with this uncomfortable story. Because sometimes the most important question isn't "what do I get?" but "what does my reaction reveal about how I see God?"
