Hope That Shows Up

Going deeper on Jason Shepperd's sermon at Church Project (The Woodlands, TX).

Week of Oct 4, 2026

The big idea

Because Christ lives in us, we can face hardship with hope and help one another grow in him.

Day 1 · FreeColossians 1:24-29

First Impressions

What can grow in a hard season?

Paul begins with a line that may stop you: he rejoices while he suffers. If you are hurting, that can sound impossible. Maybe you are tired of hearing that every hard thing has a lesson. Paul does not say pain feels good. He does not ask anyone to pretend. He is writing as someone whose work for Jesus has cost him. His joy has a reason: even in trouble, he can serve people he loves. That does not make the trouble small. It means trouble does not get the last word about what his life is for. You can bring your real feelings to this passage. There is room for grief, anger, and questions before there is room for joy.

Keep reading, and notice where Paul's eyes go. He speaks about the church, then about a message once hidden and now made known: Christ is among his people, and they have hope. The church he cares about is made of ordinary people, with ordinary problems. Paul wants them to know Jesus and grow up in him. That is why he teaches and warns them. He is not trying to win an argument or build a name for himself. He wants people to become more like Christ. When you think of church, you may picture a room, songs, or a Sunday routine. Paul pictures people worth loving through hard work. You do not have to know all of them well to begin caring. You can learn a name, share a meal, or listen when someone says the week has been rough.

The passage ends with Paul working hard, while Christ works powerfully in him. Both parts matter. Paul gives his effort; he also knows where his strength comes from. That is a gentle place to begin this week. You do not have to solve your suffering today or make yourself into a tireless helper. You can ask what Christ might give you for the next small step. Perhaps it is enough strength to tell a trusted friend what hurts. Perhaps it is a few minutes to sit with someone else. Perhaps it is simply hope that you are not alone. Read these verses again and look for a word or phrase that meets you where you are. Let that be your starting point, even if you cannot yet see what comes next.
